3-Methoxy-N1-phenylbenzene-1,4-diamine is a mitochondrial inhibitor that blocks oxidative phosphorylation by preventing the electron transfer from cytochrome c to oxygen. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of many enzymes including oxidase and amines. 3-Methoxy-N1-phenylbenzene-1,4-diamine is used in biomedical research as a reagent for histochemical staining and has been shown to be an effective agent against cyanide poisoning. This drug also has the ability to chelate metal ions such as copper or iron, which are required for oxidative enzymes such as cytochrome oxidase.
