3-Methyl-2-nitrobenzaldehyde is a compound that has been shown to undergo the shift reaction in which one atom or group of atoms is moved from one position to another. This reaction was catalyzed by carbodiimides, and the product was an n-substituted carbodiimide. 3-Methyl-2-nitrobenzaldehyde also has been shown to react with methylamine as well as amines such as aniline, cyclohexylamine, and benzylamine. The reaction products are diarylmethane derivatives with a nitrogen atom and an aryl group.
