Diethyl 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate is a crystalline organic compound that can be used as a diagnostic probe for cancer. It has been shown to have a strong affinity for DNA, and the ethyl diazoacetate moiety of the molecule forms hydrogen bonds with the phosphate groups found in DNA. This allows it to bind to DNA in a manner similar to other fluorescent probes such as ethidium bromide and acridine orange. Diethyl 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate also has potential use as an optical imaging agent for cancer diagnosis.
