Description:

3-Methylnonane is a nonane that has been synthesized from α-pinene with a hydroxyl group. 3-Methylnonane can be used in the production of biofuels and as an additive to improve diesel engine performance. 3-Methylnonane has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It has been shown to inhibit the release of proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin (IL)-1β, by inhibiting phospholipase A2 activity. 3-Methylnonane also inhibits the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are inflammatory mediators that promote airway constriction and bronchoconstriction.
3-Methylnonane is produced by reacting hexanes with supercritical CO2 at high pressure or by reacting fatty acids with water at high temperature.
