Benzyl sulfoxide is a sulfoxide that can be synthesized from benzene and hydrochloric acid. It is a solid catalyst for cationic polymerization of vinyl monomers in the presence of high values of water. Benzyl sulfoxide has been shown to inhibit microbial metabolism by binding to the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which is responsible for the oxidation of organic compounds. The reaction mechanism involves coordination geometry and electron transfer between the benzyl sulfoxide molecule and the cytochrome P450 enzyme. Benzyl sulfoxides are also used as intermediates in organic synthesis reactions.
