Tert-Butyl isocyanide (tBuNC) is an organic compound that forms complexes with palladium. It has a molecular weight of 88.08 g/mol, a melting point of -6 °C, and a boiling point of 100 °C at 760 mmHg. The tBuNC complex is prepared by reacting the ligand with PdCl2 in the presence of tert-butanol or other solvents. These complexes are usually obtained as an off-white solid which can be purified by recrystallization from acetone or other solvents. X-ray crystal structures were obtained for complexes containing hydroxy groups and nitrogen atoms, which form chelate ligands to the metal center. NMR spectra were also recorded for these complexes and electrochemical studies were done on some of them. Reaction mechanisms for these reactions have been proposed and include metal carbonyls and halides as intermediates.
