- Benzoic Acid, 2-(1,1-Dimethylethyl)-
4-tert-Butylbenzoic acid is an impurity of methylbenzene. It is a monocarboxylic acid that has been shown to be an effective corrosion inhibitor. 4-tert-Butylbenzoic acid has also been used as a cross-linking agent and in the production of polyurethanes. It can be mixed with sodium citrate to form an anti-corrosive solution for metal surfaces. The melting point of 4-tert-butylbenzoic acid is higher than that of methylbenzene, which means it exists as crystals at room temperature. This compound is soluble in both organic solvents and water, but not in deionized water. 4-tert-Butylbenzoic acid can be found in the environment due to its high reactivity with certain environmental pollutants, such as fatty acids and glycols, which are byproducts of industrial processes.
