5-Bromooxindole is a synthetic compound that is used as a marine sponge extract to study the interaction between cancer and inflammatory diseases. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. 5-Bromooxindole also inhibits the growth of cancer cells in vitro by suppressing the expression of suppressor genes such as p53, Bax, and caspases. This drug also inhibits the growth of gram-negative bacteria through interactions with their protein targets. Structural isomers of this compound show inhibitory potency against different bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
5-Bromooxindole has been shown to bind to specific sites on DNA, leading to inhibition of DNA replication and transcription. The binding site for this drug
