Benzoic anhydride is a carboxylic acid that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of benzocaine, a local anesthetic. The preparation process for benzoic anhydride involves the reaction of benzoic acid with phosgene. This reaction produces high yields and significant reductions in reactant consumption. Additionally, it has been shown that benzoic anhydride can be prepared using a solvent-free method at room temperature without the use of a catalyst, which makes it more environmentally friendly.
