Description

Boc-Glu-phenyl ester is an inhibitor of bacterial protein synthesis. It was first synthesized as a synthetic substrate for the enzyme staphylococcal protease and has been shown to be active against both human and staphylococcal cells, with activity against strains resistant to other antibiotics. Boc-Glu-phenyl ester inhibits the synthesis of proteins by binding to the catalytic site of the enzyme and preventing formation of peptide bonds. This inhibition leads to cell death due to a lack of critical proteins required for cellular function. Boc-Glu-phenyl ester is also specific for staphylococci, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of epidermolytic exotoxins.
