4-Butoxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde is a compound that yields the following major metabolites: 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde, 4-butoxybenzoic acid, and 4-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)benzoic acid. The compounds are formed by oxidation of the methoxy groups in the molecule to form reactive intermediates which react with various cellular components such as protein and DNA. This reaction leads to mitochondrial membrane permeability changes and activation of catalase. This process is catalyzed by the action of oxygen radicals generated by irradiation or diketones.
