Boc-O-benzyl-L-serine is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to activate fibroblast cells. It can be used as a topical analgesic, such as in the treatment of pain from arthritis, or in the treatment of wounds. Boc-O-benzyl-L-serine was first synthesized by the reaction of serine with benzyl chloroformate and bromoacetic acid. This reaction is carried out at room temperature and produces a mixture containing two diastereomers. The diastereomers were separated by column chromatography and then reacted with glycopeptide for activation. The activated product was purified by recrystallization in methanol to produce pure Boc-O-benzyl-L-serine.
