It is an enolate and reacts with guanine in the presence of catalysts, such as dicyclohexyl, to form an alkylating agent. The resulting product is then reacted with a second molecule of guanine to form the desired furopyridine. Tert-Butyl 2-hydroxyacetate can also be used in cross-coupling reactions mediated by palladium, which allow for the synthesis of polymers with high yields and trackability.
