Benzylhydrazine hydrochloride is a sugar-based compound that forms a diazonium salt with hydrochloric acid. It has been shown to be an irreversible inhibitor of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase and has also been used as a structural probe for studying the mechanism of action of other inhibitors. The inhibition of carbonic anhydrase by benzylhydrazine hydrochloride produces irreversible inhibition and this can be useful in distinguishing between reversible and irreversible inhibitors. This type of compound is also able to inhibit receptor activity, which may lead to biological samples being used for reaction mechanisms studies.
