Sec-butylbenzene is a colorless liquid that has a pleasant odor. It is the simplest representative of the homologous series of substituted benzenes. Sec-butylbenzene has been used as an analytical reagent in organic chemistry, as a catalyst for transfer reactions, and as a reagent for the synthesis of peptide hormones. The compound's electron-donating properties make it an excellent candidate for use as an oxidant in analytical chemistry. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has shown that sec-butylbenzene exists as two different conformers, laminar and kinetic. The laminar conformer is more stable than the kinetic conformer because it does not contain any steric strain from substituents on the benzene ring. The activation energies for this reaction are 28 kJ/mol for the laminar conformer and 34 kJ/mol for the kinetic conformer.
