1-Butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium-tosylate is a gas sensor that can be used to detect a variety of organic and inorganic gases. It is an ionic liquid with a wide range of acidity, which makes it well suited for biodiesel production. 1-Butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium-tosylate reacts with water to form hydrogen gas and methanol. The catalytic mechanism has been shown using both electrochemical methods and nanotubes. The reaction is reversible and proceeds through the following steps: 5hmf → 5hydroxymethylfurfural → 2chloride + 2deionized water → 5chloride + 2deionized water → 2chloride + 2deionized water + hydrogen gas → deionized water + hydrogen gas. 1BMI also has the ability to dissolve solutes such as chloride and can be used to study phase equilibrium in solutions
