5-(Bromomethyl)-2-chloropyridine is a drug with mediated activity. It is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme aldehyde oxidase, which is responsible for the oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to an increase in the concentration of reactive aldehydes and reactive oxygen species, which can lead to cell death. 5-(Bromomethyl)-2-chloropyridine has been shown to be effective as an anti-inflammatory agent in animal models and has also been used as an immunosuppressant in organ transplantation.
5-(Bromomethyl)-2-chloropyridine analogues have been synthesized and shown to be potent inhibitors of aldehyde oxidase, with much better pharmacokinetics than the parent molecule.
