Balapiravir is a drug that inhibits the viral enzyme RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, which is essential for viral replication. It binds to the enzyme and prevents it from binding to the template DNA strand, thereby inhibiting RNA synthesis. Balapiravir has been shown to be active against viruses such as influenza A H1N1, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and hepatitis C virus. The antiviral activity of balapiravir was found to be dose-dependent in a structural analysis study on its binding with the dna template. In treatment trials, balapiravir showed significant cytotoxicity against carcinoma cell lines and K562 cells but not healthy cell lines or normal human erythrocytes. There are no reports of serious adverse events associated with balapiravir in humans. Balapiravir also shows drug interactions with other antiviral agents such as azidothymidine and ribavirin.
