4-Bromobenzenepropanol is an ionizing and photophysical reagent that is used as a hydrogen peroxide donor. It reacts with the hydroxyl groups of proteins, which leads to the production of reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide and superoxide. 4-Bromobenzenepropanol has been shown to be a fluorescent probe for the study of Alzheimer's disease. In addition, it has been found to be a proton receptor ligand for piperazine, and can react with secondary alcohols and tertiary alcohols. 4-Bromobenzenepropanol is also known to bind to DNA and dna gyrase in bacteria, which inhibits bacterial growth by preventing transcription. The fluorescence property of this compound allows it to be used as a fluorescent dye in cancer research on Du-145 cells.
