2-Bromo-4-cyanopyridine is an ancillary chemical in the synthesis of a number of antimicrobial agents. It is used in the functional theory to study bacterial resistance. 2-Bromo-4-cyanopyridine has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and biocidal activity against a variety of bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antibacterial activity is due to the substitution effect on pyridyl rings, which can lead to conjugation with nucleophilic groups on the cell wall of bacteria. 2-Bromo-4-cyanopyridine also binds to bacterial DNA gyrase, inhibiting it from binding with ATP and causing DNA damage through photophysical processes.
