Betaxolol is a cardioselective beta-adrenergic blocker that has been shown to reduce intraocular pressure in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. It is also used for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and high blood pressure. Betaxolol is an ester prodrug that is hydrolyzed by esterases to its active form, betaxolol hydrochloride (BXH). Betaxolol hydrochloride has a significant cytotoxic effect on cells through inhibition of DNA synthesis. A majority of BXH is eliminated from the body unchanged via renal excretion, however some BXH is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes to inactive metabolites. The pharmacokinetics of this drug can be monitored by measuring plasma concentrations of betaxolol and betaxolol hydrochloride. Betaxolol may be determined by analytical methods such as x-ray diffraction data and electrochemical impedance
