Description:1,2-Benzanthracene is a model system for the study of the biological properties of benzenes. It has been shown to have mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibitory effects on the activities of enzymes such as sodium carbonate transferase and phosphofructokinase. 1,2-Benzanthracene also inhibits the growth of mouse tumor cells in culture through interference with protein synthesis. 1,2-Benzanthracene has been shown to be a skin carcinogen in animals. It can be used as a fluorescent probe for detection of benzenes in environmental samples, including wastewater treatment plants.
