Sec-butyl ether is a reactive liquid that is used in the synthesis of phosphotungstic acid. It is formed by the reaction of sec-butyl alcohol with phosphorus pentoxide. The reactants are heated to 170°C and allowed to react for 1 hour. The product is purified by distillation and then reacted with phthalic anhydride in the presence of a base catalyst, such as triethylamine, to form a telechelic acid chloride. In order to synthesize the hydrated form, sec-butyl ether must be combined with water and heated at a temperature below boiling point. This process is called hydration. Acids can be used as catalysts in this reaction because they break down into hydrogen ions (H+) when they are dissolved in water or other polar solvents. This causes an increase in the concentration of hydrogen ions, which will result in an increase in the rate of hydrolysis of esters. Sec-Butyl ether
