2-Bromo-2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane is a halogenated hydrocarbon gas that is used as an analytical reagent and chemical intermediate. It has been studied as a potential general anesthetic. 2-Bromo-2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane binds to the ryanodine receptor in the heart and paralyzes the heart muscle. This agent also inhibits the synthesis of proteins by binding to ribosomes. 2-Bromo-2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane has been shown to be effective in inhibiting papillary muscle contractions induced by sevoflurane in a model system.
