1-Benzoyl-1H-benzotriazole (1BnBT) is a colorless crystalline solid that is insoluble in water. It has a melting point of 104°C and decomposes at temperatures above 140°C. 1BnBT is an isomeric molecule with two possible structures, the cis and trans isomers. The cis form has been characterized by its nmr spectra, which are displayed in acetonitrile solutions at temperatures ranging from 0° to 100°C. The solvents used to obtain these spectra were acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran, methanol, and ethanol. The molecular ions of the cis form are detectable at m/z = 174 and m/z = 176. 1BnBT has been shown to be nucleophilic and reactive with alkenes and alkynes under thermolytic conditions. It also recombines with biphenyl under high temperature conditions
