Benzo[3,4-d]1,3-dioxolan-5-ylmethylene)methane-1,1-dicarbonitrile (BD) is a synthetic antibiotic that has been found to have antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits the growth of these bacteria by binding to DNA and inhibiting the synthesis of proteins. BD is similar in structure to chloramphenicol, which also has inhibitory effects on protein synthesis and binds to DNA. However, BD does not bind as well as chloramphenicol to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing it from inhibiting protein synthesis. This lack of inhibition may be due to a higher affinity for aromatic amines than chloramphenicol has.
