Benanserin hydrochloride is a potassium-competitive antagonist of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. It has been shown to reduce the glomerular filtration rate in animals, but not in humans. Benanserin hydrochloride has also been shown to be more effective at inhibiting protease activity in vitro than other known cholinesterase inhibitors, such as physostigmine and neostigmine. It binds to the active site of the enzyme and prevents it from breaking down other substances. Benanserin hydrochloride is used for the treatment of chronic kidney disease and high blood pressure, and is an ingredient in some weight loss supplements.
