Borneol is a monoterpene that is found in the fructus ligustri and rhizoma gastrodiae. It has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines, such as leukemia, lymphoma, breast cancer, and prostate cancer cells. Borneol also has anti-inflammatory properties that are due to its inhibition of the production of arachidonic acid metabolites (e.g., prostaglandins) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes. Borneol also binds to DNA and can alter gene expression. This may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of certain transcription factors such as NF-κB or AP-1, which regulate the expression of genes related to inflammation and cell survival. Borneol also inhibits complex enzymes involved in energy metabolism, including mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase and succinic dehydrogenase.
