2-Butenenitrile is a reactive chemical that can be produced by the reaction of acetylene and hydrogen chloride. This chemical has two hydrogen atoms attached to a double bond. The activation energies for this reaction are -6.0 kcal/mol and -6.8 kcal/mol, which shows that the reaction is exothermic. The products of this reaction include crotononitrile, hydrochloric acid, and adiponitrile. The optimal conditions for this reaction are between 50 degrees Celsius and 60 degrees Celsius at atmospheric pressure with a mole ratio of 1:1:1 (acetylene:hydrogen chloride:water). 2-Butenenitrile also reacts with trifluoroacetic acid to produce hydroxyl group (-OH) and trifluoroacetic acid.
