- tert-Butyl vinyl ether
Tert-butyl vinyl ether is a chemical compound that has a basic structure. It is an example of a tertiary alcohol, which is an organic molecule with three carbon atoms in its backbone and an alcohol functional group attached to one of the carbons. Tert-butyl vinyl ether is used as a stabilizer in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics and other products. This chemical can be synthesized by reacting sodium carbonate with methyl ethyl ketone. The product of this reaction has been shown to have conformational properties that allow it to stabilize PVC during polymerization reactions. The reaction products are nucleophilic attack by hydroxide ions on methyl ethyl ketone, giving tert-butyl vinyl ether, and hydrogen bond formation between the two molecules. Tert-butyl vinyl ether also reacts with water to form hydroxide ions and methyl ethylene glycol, which can be detected using nmr spectra.
