Product Information
2-Bromo-2-methylpropanenitrile is a colorless liquid that is soluble in common organic solvents. It can be used as a precursor to acylsilanes, which are used in the synthesis of natural products and pharmaceuticals. 2-Bromo-2-methylpropanenitrile can be reduced by sodium borohydride to form the corresponding amine, or by hydrogen gas and palladium on charcoal to form the corresponding alcohol. These reactions require an activation energy of 60 kJ/mol. Bromoethane is formed as an intermediate in these reactions, which is oxidized to ethane with air or oxygen over time. The carbon tetrachloride also reacts with 2-bromo-2-methylpropanenitrile, forming chloroform and methyl chloride as reduction products. These reactions take place at room temperature.
