2,4-Bis(alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzyl)phenol is an antihistamine that is structurally similar to the drug diphenhydramine. It is a phenolic compound that inhibits the activity of histamine in the body by blocking H1 receptors. 2,4-Bis(alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzyl)phenol has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity and reduce weight gain in vivo models. This compound also has antihistaminic properties which may be useful for treatment of allergic reactions. The antihistaminic activity is due to its ability to block H1 histamine receptors and inhibit release of inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes. The 2,4-Bis(alpha, alpha-dimethylbenzyl)phenol molecule can undergo oxidation through a hydroxybenzoic acid intermediate and then react with methyl alcohol to form a phenoxyacetic acid product.
