Brinzolamide related compound A is a synthetic model for the membrane transporter-binding site of brinzolamide. It was synthesized by reacting 2,4-diaminobicyclo[2.2.1]heptane with 3,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid and N-methylmorpholine followed by hydrolysis of the ester group to give the amine, which then underwent a series of reactions to form brinzolamide related compound A. The molecule has one functional group that can bind to transporters in the membrane of cells infected with viruses or bacteria. This binding prevents the transporter from binding to other molecules and thereby stops the transport of ions across the cell membrane and prevents replication of dna in cells.
