Baccatin III is a natural product of the plant Taxus brevifolia. It has been found to have antitumor, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory tests. Baccatin III has shown activity against various human cancers, including skin cancer, as well as bowel disease, and may be useful for treating myeloma cell lines. This compound also binds to the taxol receptor (PTXR) on the surface of cells, which prevents the binding of other compounds to this receptor. In addition, baccatin III has been shown to bind to mitochondria and inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential. The molecule is also biocompatible and can be synthesized into a polymer with x-ray diffraction data that will allow it to be used as a drug delivery system for cancer treatment.
