Benz[j]aceanthrylene and Benz[e]aceanthrylene (70:30 Mixture) are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that have been shown to cause cancer in animals. They can be metabolized to covalent adducts with nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids. These adducts have been found in the liver cells of rats treated with these compounds. The hl-60 cells were also found to be sensitive to these compounds, which may be due to their ability to induce tumour suppressor protein p53. In addition, benz[j]aceanthrylene and benz[e]aceanthrylene (70:30 Mixture) are genotoxic chemicals that can damage DNA by causing mutations or inhibiting replication of DNA strands.
