Benzalazine is a benzothiadiazine derivative that inhibits the activity of the enzyme xanthine oxidase. This prevents the formation of uric acid and allantoin, substances that contribute to gout attacks. Benzalazine has been shown to be effective in treating bowel disease and skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. It has also been found to have genotoxic effects in laboratory studies.
Benzalazine is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of about 154°C. The molecular weight of this compound is 219.2 g/mol and it has a molar mass of 370.6 g/mol. The solubility in water at room temperature is 0.4 mg/L (4g/L).
