Bergaptol is a coumarin derivative that is chemically synthesized from dihydroconiferyl alcohol. Bergaptol inhibits the activity of enzymes such as p450 and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by forming a disulfide bond with cysteine residues in the enzyme. This prevents the formation of disulfide bonds between proteins, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Bergaptol has been shown to affect body formation in vitro, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of proteins vital for cell division. The biological properties of bergaptol are determined using various in vitro assays, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sodium salt, colloidal gold, and matrix effect.
