Betamethasone 9,11-epoxide is a synthetic corticosteroid used in the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions. It has been shown to be efficacious in vivo and in vitro as well as being an efficient method for the synthesis of cortisone derivatives. Betamethasone 9,11-epoxide is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, each with its own stereochemical configuration. The enol form (S) is more active than the keto form (R). The chiral center at C-9 and C-11 can be oxidized to provide a cyclic carbon chain that leads to the formation of an enolate. This compound can then be transformed into other compounds by using high-performance liquid chromatography or other chromatographic methods.
