Bifenox is a phenoxy-substituted benzothiadiazole that inhibits the growth of bacteria by interfering with photosynthetic activity. Bifenox is used in biological treatment and as a chemical agent for the control of algae, crustaceans, and weeds. Bifenox can be used to treat metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. It has also been shown to have an effect on the development of colon cancer cells in vitro. Bifenox may also be used to treat viral infections, including HIV and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). The mechanism of action is currently unknown but may be related to its ability to inhibit fatty acid biosynthesis or interfere with lipid metabolism.
Bifenox is not genotoxic or mutagenic, but it does show some evidence of genotoxic effects in vivo in mice that are exposed via inhalation or injection. These effects include increased chromosomal
