(S)-BINAP is a solid catalyst that is used in nucleophilic substitution reactions to convert amines into aryl halides. It is an effective trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) scavenger, which leads to lower levels of TFA-mediated side reactions. This ligand has been shown to be an efficient chelate ligand for aryl halides and nitrogen atoms. The chemical reactions of (S)-BINAP are catalyzed by the presence of metals such as zinc, copper, nickel, and palladium. The asymmetric synthesis of chiral compounds has been achieved using this ligand with isolated yields up to 95%. (S)-BINAP also has potent antagonistic effects on carbonyl groups, which makes it useful for the synthesis of tiglic acid derivatives.
