4-Bromobenzyl cyanide is a synthetic compound that is used as a chemical intermediate in the production of coumarin derivatives. It is also used as an analytical reagent for the detection of cancer cells by optical microscopy. The compound exhibits fluorescence, which can be detected at a wavelength of about 527 nm. 4-Bromobenzyl cyanide has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential in both isolated mitochondria and intact cells. In addition, it has been reported that this compound induces apoptosis in cancer cells and inhibits tumor growth in mice with transplanted human cancers.
