Busulfan is a chemotherapy drug that is used to treat certain cancers and blood disorders. Busulfan is administered intravenously as an injection solution, which may be given over 1 to 4 hours depending on the dose. Busulfan has a concentration-time curve with a rapid onset of action and short duration of action. The elimination half-life is about 2 hours. Busulfan has been shown to have immunosuppressive effects in experimental models of autoimmune diseases and hyperproliferative diseases such as lymphomas and myelogenous leukemia. The mechanism of this effect is not known, but it may be due to inhibition of IL-2 receptor binding or inhibition of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
