Butein is a cyclic lipopeptide that has been shown to have reactive properties. Butein binds to DNA and induces apoptosis in cancer cells. The biological properties of butein are related to its ability to induce the expression of cell cycle inhibitors, such as p21, which prevents the progression of the cell cycle and leads to apoptosis. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect on the immune system, inhibiting nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation, and has been shown to inhibit tumor growth. Butein is found in etoac extract from Eucalyptus globulus leaves and has also been isolated from other plants, such as Aconitum carmichaeli and Curcuma aromatica.
