3,5-Bis(tert-butyl)benzaldehyde is a reactive compound that can be used to prepare other chemicals. It is used in organic synthesis as a reagent for the conversion of nitro groups to formyl groups. The mechanism of this reaction is believed to involve an acid-catalyzed trichloroacetic acid transfer followed by periodinane oxidation of the formyl group and subsequent reduction. 3,5-Bis(tert-butyl)benzaldehyde can also be used to selectively cleave the phosphate esters from membranes. The solvents used in this chemical reaction are acetonitrile and nitrobenzene. This chemical has been shown to have chemoselective properties with acidic substrates. 3,5-Bis(tert-butyl)benzaldehyde reacts with formaldehyde under acidic conditions but not under basic conditions.
