N-tert-Butylacetaldimine is an aldehyde that is used as a precursor for the synthesis of β-unsaturated aldehydes. It can be prepared in high yield through the reaction of acetaldehyde with aluminum isopropoxide and methylaluminum chloride. This reaction produces both N-tert-butylacetaldimine and methylaluminum sulfide, which are separated by distillation. The stereoselectivity of this reaction can be controlled by changing the solvent polarity. N-tert-Butylacetaldimine is used to synthesize β-unsaturated aldehydes such as 1,4-pentadiyne and 2,5-hexadienal.
