N,N-Bis-(3-aminopropyl)-methylamine is a polyamine that is used as an electrolyte, a polymer, and a probe for the determination of the molecular weight of other compounds. It is also used in the preparation of N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Methylpropylamine has been shown to be an effective polymerization agent. This compound contains two aminopropyl groups that are attached to one another through an ether linkage. The molecular weight of methylpropylamine can be determined by measuring the amount of light absorbed at 280 nm or by measuring its melting point. The crystallinity can be determined by x-ray diffraction.
Methylpropylamine has been shown to react with sodium cyanide to form methylpropyl cyanide and hydrogen cyanide.
