5-Bromovaleric acid is a cyclic fatty acid that is used as an organic solvent. It is also an active substance in the synthesis of a number of insecticides and pesticides. 5-Bromovaleric acid inhibits mosquito oviposition by disrupting the function of the female sex pheromone gland, thereby reducing fertility rates. This compound has been shown to have activity against a number of pests, such as cockroaches, ants, and termites. It has been shown to be toxic to vertebrates, including mammals and birds.
5-Bromovaleric acid is a fluorinated organic solvent with structural formula CHBrO(CO)H (CAS No. 1301-64-4). It is not soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents.
