Product Information
- Benzyl 2-hydroxyacetateHydroxyacetic acid benzyl ester
- Benzyl Hydroxyacetate
Benzyl glycolate is a small molecule that has been shown to have cell-maturation activity. It is synthesized from the reaction of benzaldehyde and glyoxylic acid with sodium hydroxide. The product contains a hydroxyl group, which is an important structural feature for the synthesis of drugs and other compounds. Benzyl glycolate is soluble in water and methanol, but insoluble in ether or chloroform. It is not toxic to mammalian cells, but has been shown to have receptor activity. Benzyl glycolate also reacts with toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4) on macrophages and dendritic cells, which initiates the production of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β. This compound degrades through ester linkages to produce benzoic acid and glycine.
