Sec-butyl chloroformate is a gas sensor that can be used to detect and identify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of water vapor. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells, with an antitumour activity being detected at concentrations as low as 0.1 mM. Sec-butyl chloroformate also inhibits protein synthesis in vitro by reacting with amino groups on proteins, which may be due to its ability to react with sodium carbonate in a reaction solution. The sec-butyl chloroformate reacts with sodium carbonate to form ethyl esters, which then react with chloroformates (formed from the hydrolysis of ethyl esters) to produce ethyl chloroformates. Ethyl chloroformates are responsible for inhibiting cell function by reacting with thiol groups on proteins and other biological molecules. The reaction mechanism for this process is still unknown but it is believed that sec-but
