Benzyl 2-bromoethyl ether is a synthetic, non-nucleoside inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication. It inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme used by HIV to create DNA from its RNA genome. The compound binds to the active site of the enzyme and stabilizes it in an inactive conformation. This prevents the enzyme from binding to its natural substrate, dNTPs, and thus blocks DNA synthesis. Benzyl 2-bromoethyl ether has been shown to inhibit 4-methoxyphenylboronic acid incorporation into human estrogen receptor α and β subtypes, as well as benzodiazepine receptors. It also has significant antiproliferative activity against breast cancer cells in vitro.
Benzyl 2-bromoethyl ether is a potential diagnostic agent for cancer and other diseases that activate the estrogen receptor or benzodiazepine receptors.
